1. Meter readings
Your bill shows a previous reading and a current reading. The difference between the two, in kWh, is your units consumed for that billing cycle. This is the number you enter into a slab calculator.
units consumed = current meter reading − previous meter reading
2. Billing cycle
TNEB domestic (LT-IA) connections are billed bimonthly — once every two months, not monthly. If you're used to thinking in monthly terms, remember to double your rough monthly usage estimate before comparing it against the slab tables, since the free-unit thresholds (100 or 200 units) apply per two-month cycle, not per month.
3. Energy charges
This is the slab-wise cost of the units you consumed, calculated telescopically as explained in our slabs guide. This is the figure this calculator estimates.
4. Fixed charges
A charge based on your sanctioned/contracted load (in kW), applied regardless of how much you actually consumed. This is separate from and in addition to energy charges.
5. Fuel Surcharge Adjustment (FSA)
A variable, periodically revised per-unit charge that reflects changes in fuel and power purchase costs. It can change from one billing cycle to the next even if the base tariff doesn't.
6. Taxes and other charges
Domestic consumers typically don't pay electricity tax (unlike commercial/industrial categories), but check your bill for any additional cess or municipal charges specific to your connection.
7. Due date and late payment
Your bill specifies a due date. Paying after this date usually attracts a late payment surcharge, so it's worth setting a reminder around your bimonthly cycle.
Where to check your bill online
You can check your reading and bill status on the official TANGEDCO/TNPDCL portal using your Service Connection Number, which is printed on your physical bill or White Meter Card.
